I’ve always enjoyed sports. I used to compete in figure skating in Australia as a young girl which was a rather obscure sport for an Aussie! But when I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 12 I gave the sport up as I learned to cope with my new condition and all the challenges that came with it. It was some years later that I started to get into the gym and lifting weights. The adrenaline you get from lifting heavy and pushing your strength to the limit is empowering and I felt like it gave me back a sense of control over my body that the diabetes had taken away. It wasn’t long after that that I decided to compete in Bikini Fitness. the idea of really taking it to the next level excited me. I wanted to see if it was possible as a T1D athlete to get up on stage and compete at an elite level. I didn’t have any wild expectations but after a solid prep I won my first two shows and qualified for the British Finals that year. The sense of satisfaction, having proved my doctors wrong, who told me it would be too difficult, and proving that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything.

Nutrition has been a huge part of my life since I was diagnosed. I had to learn to count carbs and adjust insulin doses at an early age so when I started to get into bodybuilding all that knowledge over the years really assisted me in figuring out my macros and calories. Its certainly given me a real passion for clean balanced eating and understanding at a molecular level what our food is doing to us on the inside and how it contributes to weight management and muscle gain. This is what lead me into training to become a personal trainer and specialising in competition prep and weight management. I love what I do. I love being a part of my clients journeys. To watch their transformations over the weeks and months is so rewarding.

Salmon and mashed white potato with green beans – I love fish, especially salmon.
